| Village scene in Nepal |
It’s 4 am. Dogs are fighting outside. Yesterday on our way to meet Nirmal’s boys,
our driver skirted dogs sleeping in the road. I can see why they slept.
I’ve got to tell you,
yesterday, by the end of the day, I was feeling discouraged. I was going to
pack my bags and get out of here. I’ve met with obstacles, some anticipated,
others not, that change my mind about what I am hoping to find.
After sleeping on it, I
decided to stay. I owe myself today and so once more I’ll be traveling to the
villages on the outskirts of Kathmandu, meeting boys with muscular dystrophy.
But, since I’m up and before
I get going here is a quick study of yesterday.
Yesterday we met three of the
eight boys I came here to see. We drove
over roads that I can only describe as ‘solid rapids’ and it was as fun as it
sounds – not.
With me were Nirmal, his
nephew, Sunil, Sunil’s friend, the driver, and the physiotherapist assistant
who works with Nirmal. (Tina, since he has no email, I am emailing your PT
videos to Nirmal who will share them.)
Nirmal has his agenda for my
trip and I have mine. He wants to bring
the boys under one roof where they can be cared for. I want to figure out what
their diseases and their needs are.

We had tea and biscuits while
the parents, through Sunil’s crack interpreting, described their son’s life.
The mom showed me the picture of her oldest son who was 23 when he died of
muscular dystrophy, two years older than Azay is today.
Back here in my room at the
Panauti hotel, I hear a cock crowing – maybe the one I saw in the courtyard. The
hotel is in an ancient building, it looks like it might has been a monastery
(note to self research history of Panauti hotel.)
